Chimney Inspection Levels

Grey Brick Wall

1

Level 1 Inspection

  • Purpose: This is the most basic inspection and is typically performed during routine maintenance or when no significant changes to the chimney system are expected.

  • Scope:

    • Examination of readily accessible parts of the chimney, venting systems, and connections.

    • Checking for basic soundness of the chimney structure and flue.

    • Ensuring the chimney is clear of obstructions and combustible deposits.

  • When to Perform:

    • Recommended annually for chimneys under regular use.

    • After any operational changes or events that might affect the chimney’s performance (e.g., a chimney fire).

2

Level 2 Inspection

  • Purpose: This level is more comprehensive and involves a detailed examination of all accessible parts of the chimney and its flue.

  • Scope:

    • Includes all elements of a Level 1 inspection.

    • Video scanning or other means to examine the internal surfaces of the chimney flue.

    • Inspection of accessible areas in attics, basements, and crawl spaces to check for proper installation and maintenance.

  • When to Perform:

    • Required before selling or transferring property with a chimney.

    • After a chimney fire or natural disaster.

    • When a Level 1 inspection reveals a need for further investigation.

3

Level 3 Inspection

  • Purpose: This is the most detailed and invasive inspection, involving examination of concealed areas and components of the chimney.

  • Scope:

    • Includes all elements of Level 1 and Level 2 inspections.

    • May require removal of certain components of the chimney or structure to access concealed areas for inspection.

  • When to Perform:

    • When hazards are suspected that cannot be evaluated through Level 1 or Level 2 inspections.

    • When serious damage is suspected, such as after a chimney fire or earthquake.
